Summer Job FAQ's
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SUMMER JOB:
What are the requirements for Summer Staff?
We hire staff that are 16 years of age and older (some positions require staff to be older). We want all our staff members to have a passion for fitness and community and a heart to love and serve others. Our staff members are expected to work hard, collaborate well with others, and be willing to grow in their personal relationship with God.
What certifications will I need to apply for Lifeguarding?
You must be currently Red Cross Lifeguard certified (or equivalent) in order to work at the Center as a Lifeguard. You will need to provide certification verification before being hired.
What certifications will I need for Swim Instructing?
We require Red CrossRed Cross Lifeguard certification (or equivalent) and must be completed before your first day of work. We also require that you are a competent and experienced swimmer. Although not required, we strongly prefer swim team experience and experience working with children ages 3-12.
Do I need to be interviewed?
If this is your first time applying at the Center, or if it’s been more than one summer since you’ve worked at the Center, then you will need to be formally interviewed in person. After you complete the online application, you will be contacted within two weeks for a formal interview. If you were here last summer you will be exempt from a formal interview, but we will have an informal interview (usually over the phone) to check in and discuss your goals and your heart for the summer.
If I can’t make it to an interview, what should I do?
Please note on your application or follow-up email that you will not be able to have an in person interview; We will schedule an interview on Skype or over the phone.
When will I find out if I’m hired?
We will start the hiring process in mid-January by posting our application online. Our goal is to have all summer staff hired by mid-April. We will first begin with current staff and last summer’s staff. Then we will begin to go over the first applicants whose application are complete (application, references, interview) by mid-February. Although you could be notified sooner, you should know by April if you’ve been selected for a summer staff position. If we have a heavy amount of applicants, don’t be alarmed if you do not hear back from us until late April. If you are selected for a position, you will receive an email of congratulations and forms to complete.
After I’ve been hired?
Once we have decided to offer you a position, if you are 18 and older, or never been background checked by Livescan for Peninsula Covenant Church or the Community Center before, you will need to have this done. This form (with instructions) will be in your hiring packet and must be filled out BEFORE your first day of work. When you turn in your paperwork, please bring your passport (must be valid) or your driver’s license and Social Security Card. A copy will be made for the I9 Form.
I need to arrive late/leave early for college. Can I still be considered for a position?
We want to hire staff able to commit to work the entire ten weeks of summer. Therefore, priority will be given to those able to work the entire summer. However, we do have limited positions available for those needing to arrive late/leave early for college. Our training begins June 10th, and our summer season will end on August 20th. It is MANDATORY for all staff to be present for the first summer staff training day. Please make note of any late arrivals/early departures in your application under “dates available to work”.
What if I need time off during the summer?
We require all requested time off to be submitted BEFORE the summer begins. Because summer is a short ten week period of time, we require all staff to commit to at least eight of the ten weeks of summer. If you can not commit to at least eight weeks, you may not be a good fit for the Peninsula Community Center.
If you need to request time off during the summer, it must be at least two weeks before the dates requested and you will be responsible for finding the staff necessary to fill your position while you are gone. The earlier requests are made, the better chance time off will be granted. We reserve the right to decline your request for time off if it is not given before the start of the summer.
