Who Is PE+?
THE PE+ STORY
The original PE+ team was founded in 2009 to help fill the basic need for physical education in local Redwood City schools. In October of 2009, the PE+ team launched its first classes in five schools. During that first year, it became evident that the needs of our students were for more than just PE equipment and instruction. During class time and recess time, our students entered into a community in which they were encouraged to value physical exercise and teamwork.
With a grant given by the Sequoia Healthcare District, The Peninsula Community Center (PCC) and Redwood City Parks & Recreation (PRCS) Community Service Department are partnering to provide Physical and Nutrition Education classes for 11 schools in Redwood City, serving grades K-5. This is a tremendous opportunity and a collaborative effort to ensure that the students in Redwood City have the opportunity to experience this kind of PE community. Our role is to help schools meet the California Physical Fitness Standards and build healthy school communities.
What Is PE+?
PE+ has graciously been integrated into our Redwood City schools. As our relationship with the district, schools, staff, and students grew, so did our understanding of what each school needed. Based on these needs, we are proud to offer every school:
• Four trained PE+ coaches, Monday through Friday, throughout the school year.
• An extensive standards-based grade-level appropriate curriculum for K-5th-grade classes.
• 50-minute classes twice a week for our 3rd-5th-grade classes.
• 40-minute classes twice a week for our 1st and 2nd-grade classes.
• 30-minute classes for our kindergarten classes.
• Nutrition elements integrated into our curriculum for our students to learn healthy lifestyles.
• Recess and lunch support to encourage students to play safely and responsibly while out in the yard.
PE+ currently operates at six school sites in Redwood City.
- Roosevelt School
- John Gill School
- Hoover School
- Fair Oaks School
- Taft School
- Orion School
- KIPP Exelencia Community Prep
Why Do We Do What We Do?
To use sports and fitness to build and strengthen communities.
That the communities around the schools we serve are transformed in a positive way because of PE+.
This transformation happens in 4 ways:
Students participate and learn about fitness and healthy lifestyle choices.
Coaches encourage teamwork and affirm each student for individual gifts and effort.
PE+ creates a safe place where students are free to express and share their emotions.
Meeting Learning Needs
Coaches teach age appropriate lessons for each grade.

Become a Coach
Our coaching team leads safe PE classes where children are inspired to get off the sidelines and into the game. Coaches are on school campuses leading classes and games during recesses five days a week. Coaches attend weekly meetings and build relationships with our local community.
