WBSL  |  Summer Swim Team

Our PCC Dolphins West Bay Swim League (WBSL) Summer Swim Team is designed to give swimmers at all levels some competition experience while developing essential swimming skills within a fun and supportive team framework. WBSL is a summer swim league with four other local summer swim teams. During the summer season, we will do four dual meets and a final championship meet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are practices held?

During the year-round season, practices are held at Peninsula Community Center at 3623 Jefferson Ave, Redwood City. During the summer season, practices are held at the Sequoia High School pool.

What are the minimum requirements in order to join the team?

We ask that all swimmers have either graduated from the PCC Swim School curriculum or know how to swim freestyle with side breathing and backstroke, as well as the basics of breaststroke and dolphin (butterfly) kick in order to join the team. We ask that our swimmers are age 5 and above.

Is my swimmer required to attend all practices and will you prorate if my swimmer can only come to one practice a week?

We do not have an attendance requirement. You may show up to as many or as few practices as you would like, however, we do not prorate.

What is your cancellation policy?

Year-Round Season: If you wish to stop swimming with us, notification (including the swimmer’s name and group) must be emailed to Lisa Hewitt, Aquatics Program Manager, at lisah@wearepcc.com no later than the 20th of the month to avoid being charged for the following month. Phone notification or in-person notification are not valid forms of notification. If you submit your cancellation after the 20th of the month, your registration will renew and you will be charged for one more month. Summer Season: The team registration fee is non-refundable and holds your spot on the team. Email requests to lisah@wearepcc.com must be received 14 or more days prior to the registered class session date for a full refund. Phone and in person notification are not valid forms of notification. A 50% fee will be deducted from any refund requested thirteen days or less prior to the beginning of the class. No refund will be made once the class has started, and no makeup classes will be granted. Refunds will not be granted for absences, dismissal or voluntary withdrawal from the class or for changes to the class schedule deemed necessary by Center staff.

What swim meets will my swimmer participate in?

We do not participate in USA swimming competitions. During the year-round season, we will run a couple of intrasquad swim meets at PCC where swimmers will compete against other swimmers on the Dolphins team. We will use the starting equipment and timing system for some competition practice, however, these meets are completely optional. During the summer, we participate in the West Bay Swim League where we partake in 4 dual meets and a final championship meet.

What is the West Bay Swim League (WBSL)?

WBSL is a summer swim league with four other local summer swim teams. During the summer season, we will do four dual meets and a final championship meet.

When will my swimmer move up? Do you do evaluations?

We will be continuously evaluating our swimmers and will move them up when we feel they are ready. During the year, there will no longer be a formal evaluation period at the end of each session as we will be running continuously. However, we will do at least one feedback check-point during the year-round season. During the summer season, you can note your swimmers progress at our swim meets! If you have any questions about your swimmer’s progress, you can always contact Lisa at lisah@wearepcc.com.

What kind of swimsuit should my swimmer wear and what kind of equipment does my swimmer need before joining the team?

We ask that all swimmers have goggles and a swimsuit suitable for swim practice before joining the team. We ask our female swimmers to wear one piece suits and ask our male swimmers to wear jammers or swim briefs. Wearing swim trunks or shorts is not advised as they create extra drag and sometimes do not stay up.

Is there swim practice in the rain?

We will hold practice when it is raining; however, we will cancel practice if one of the following occurs: Lightning or thunder. If coaches or Center staff hear thunder or observe lightning within the half hour before the start of practice, we will cancel practice and notify all parents by email. If swimmers are already in the water, we will have them exit the pool and wait in the lobby while we call their guardians to come pick them up. After each time lightning is spotted, we must wait 30 minutes before re-entering the pool. Given most of our practices are an hour or less, practice will be canceled once lightning is spotted. Wind or heavy rain obscuring the bottom of the pool. If it is raining too heavily or the wind is gusty enough that it obscures the coaches ability to see the bottom of the pool, we will also cancel practice. We will send an email before practice starts letting you know if we are worried about our ability to see the bottom of the pool. Once practice has started, if the rain or wind picks up, we will do our best to practice through as the danger is less emergent; however, we will get out if it is too dangerous and will email families with later practice times to cancel practice. If at any point we feel our ability to keep our swimmers safe is in jeopardy due to any reason, we will exit the pool and have swimmers wait with us in the lobby until their guardian arrives. We will not be prorating, crediting, or refunding due to weather events or cancellations outside of our control.

What is the difference between the year-round swim team and the summer swim team? What happens in August?

Our year-round swim team runs September through May on a monthly model. We host events in and out of the water, including intrasquad competition events, but do not compete with other teams. Our summer swim team runs during June and July, and we participate in the West Bay Swim League, which includes four dual swim meets and a championship meet. We take August off between our summer and year-round seasons.

After submitting the registration form, how do I know that my child is enrolled?

You will receive email confirmation of registration within 5-10 business days of submitting your form. If you have registered for a group that is full and it is not already marked as waitlisted on the form, you will be notified within 2 business days.
