Parents, Referees, Coaches, and Volunteers
What are the expectations of parents in Upward?
Parents are pivotal to the success of Upward. We ask for parent volunteers to support their team as either coaches, assistant coaches, team parents, referees or as positive supporting fans. We ask for parents to partner with us to help us create the fun and safe learning environment that creates “teachable moments”, character building, and best versions of our young athletes and families.
Is there a need for referees?
Yes. We ask for parent volunteers to assist our hired youth referees in our Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd-grade games. For our 3rd grade games, we have hired referees. *Our parent referees will receive training prior to game start and will be assisted throughout the season.
Coaches – Volunteers are needed! You will be provided with a coach playbook and training to walk you through both practices and games. Your commitment is one 50 minute practice each week, coaching a game on the weekend (8 total games) and being intentional to create a positive experience for your players as well as connect with families. If you volunteer to coach you will be given first priority to your practice day request.
Team Parent – Support your coach by helping with team communications, connecting with other families on your team and creating a snack schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who do I talk to if I have a problem or question on game day?
A game commissioner will be available on the court all day on every game day. The game commissioner will manage the referees, and field any questions for parents, coaches, and players.
When and how long are practices?
Practices are once/week (M-F & Sun.) for 50 minutes. When you register you choose ONE night your child cannot practice. We will place your child on a team that does not practice on your requested day.
*EXCEPTION – Kindergarteners do not have weekly practices, rather a half-hour practice followed by a half-hour game on Saturdays.
Where are practices and games?
All practices are located in the GYM at Peninsula Community Center (3623 Jefferson Ave. Redwood City, CA 94061)
When are games?
All Upward games are played on Saturdays. Kindergarteners, 1st and 2nd-grade teams will play half-court. Third graders play full court. The first game generally begins at 8:30 am. Games are scheduled with younger teams playing first followed by older teams. Game schedules will be emailed to you and online no later than January 7th, 2019.
Where should I park when my bringing my player to practice and games:
Parking for Upward families can be accessed at the 3650 Farm Hill Blvd Church entrance. We reserve the Community Center parking lot for our Community Center members.
When will I find out what team my player is on?
Your player’s coach will contact you by December 17th, 2018 to let you know when your first team meeting will be as well as your player’s practice time and day.
What is the format for practices & games?
At practices, coaches have a warm-up time, a focused time of drills, and a 5-minute “huddle” where coaches help the team get to know each other, talk about teamwork and have a weekly character building conversation relating to a biblical principle or verse.
At both practices and games, players can earn stars (that iron on to uniforms) for exhibiting good character and skills on the court. At the half time of each game an activity occurs that reinforces the previous practice’s “huddle” session.
Can my player be on a team with his/her friends?
We do NOT accommodate “friend requests”. The purpose of Upward is for players to have equal playing time in a fun, safe and non-competitive league. For this reason, we do not purposefully place players together based on friendships.
Although your player may end up on the same team as a friend, we don’t handpick teams because we encourage your players to make friends with new teammates and base our team selections on player evaluations.
Am I as a parent expected to attend the practices & games?
Parents need to sign in/out their child for practices for safety and liability reasons. Siblings cannot be left at practices or games unattended. Out of courtesy to members of the Center and other programs, we ask that you stay in the gym area.
When will my player receive his/her uniform?
All players will receive their uniform during the first or second practice from their coach. With the registration fee, each player receives a jersey and t-shirt. If you wish to purchase shorts, they are optional and an additional $20. Players are sized for their uniforms at evaluations. No reorders will be made for uniforms.
